The Gumball 3000 Rally is, for me, a ‘bucket list’ life event. It’s something I have wanted to do for well over a decade; so having the opportunity to do it is literally a dream come true. But doing the Gumball is just one side of the coin; you also have to look the part.
So when I approached Ermenegildo Zegna about making me a suit to wear on the Rally I knew I had to make it count. It’s one of those brands that I have had the privilege of enjoying for a few years now and, for me, epitomises Italian flair and craftsmanship combined with an old (but not too old) school charm. For me the brand says elegance and class, with a modern contemporary twist. We all like to align ourselves to a brand or image, to a lesser or greater extent, consciously or subconsciously, and this is the one I have chosen.
When the suit was finally ready and I tried it on for the first time, it blew me away. I am fortunate to have had suits made by Zegna previously but the colour and weight of fabric chosen by the team at their flagship store (Marcos, Marco and Hamid), was absolutely perfect. In fact, they pretty much did all the hard work for me; all I had to do was choose the colour of the lining and the buttons!
So here it is; in super 200’s wool – just the right balance of longevity with lightness, softness with durability. To complement the blue, we chose a beige / sand coloured lining, which will also tone with the watch made for me by HYT while, in my opinion, the pièce de résistance was the addition of a single gold button to the left cuff; once again a nod to the very special bespoke timepiece being made for me to wear on the Rally.
And the fit and finish, with the measurements taken by another member of the excellent team, Michael, is exceptional. I could not be happier with the finished product.
My sincere thanks go to the team, led by my good friend Marcos, for all their help. They did an absolutely fantastic job and I cannot wait to wear it at the Rally’s opening party in Mykonos!!
